The Gunfighter Squadron was the first and prototype Mooney Caravan regional formation flying organization established in 2011. The Gunfighter's were originally organized early in the all formation format of the Mooney Caravan to get our pilots safely comfortable in formation flying. It has been in continuous operation.
In 2015, we associated the clinic to be a joint operation with the Red Star Pilots Association. The RPA flies eastern block aircraft as well as US military training aircraft. The association with the RPA has allowed us to utilize their outstanding training personnel and educational opportunities. This has resulted in numerous Mooney Caravan pilots to become FAST qualified wingmen and lead pilots. This expansion of credentialed formation pilots has been a benefit to the Caravan as a whole. Although the Gunfighters are a "regional clinic" it has matured into an advanced formation education venue where Caravan pilots from all corners of the continent come to advance their formation skills.
Our advanced formation clinic is typically held in the early part of the calendar year when the weather is excellent, and temperatures are ideal. We are based at MCAS Yuma. An added benefit is the close partnership with the Marine Air Station who also participates in our event. Our clinic has developed special airspace with coordination with MCAS ATC, their assistance aids in our efficient use of the airspace and airfield during joint Marine and Caravan operations. Our dedicated ramp is shared with Marine C-130's, FA-18's, and other high-performance aircraft. The MCAS operations are the next best thing to seeing an organized airshow, we are right in the middle of the action.
The Squadron Commander is Chuck "Cowboy" Crinnian. The Gunfighters welcome any pilots that wish to advance their skills after basic skills are achieved.
