Welcome to the Flying Monkey Squadron of the Mooney Caravan! We're a rag-tag bunch of hard-flying, fun-loving misfits straight out of the Heartland. We've assumed the "Monkey" moniker based on our geographic composition
Missouri,
Oklahoma,
Nebraska, and
Kansas and the glaringly obvious connection to the Land of OZ!
Although we may look like a bunch of knuckle-dragging, peanut throwing primates with rowdy personalities, don't let our looks fool you - we're rock solid in the air! Our Squadron Leader, James "Pepper" Oliphant has flown every Mooney Caravan since our first trip to the Emerald City (Oshkosh) in 1998. As a former high school band director, he has the leadership skills to get this gaggle of apes on the same sheet of music.
We host a formation clinic in early May in Wichita, Kansas (of course) focusing on demonstrating the flying proficiency required for our annual trip up the yellow brick road to Oshkosh. Our gatherings are also an opportunity to re-kindle friendships and enjoy the finest beverages our local grain and wheat farmers can provide. Our Monkey flying, fellowship, and fun has drawn Caravan pilots from well outside OZ including CA, TX, and WI. In addition to our annual clinic we gather informally throughout the year for proficiency flying and attending local fly-ins, parade flybys, and burger runs.
Whether you're brainless, heartless, or cowardly we still welcome you to join us on our quest to Oshkosh. We'll lock arms and skip off in unison down the yellow brick (singing optional).
