LANDING AT OSHKOSH

Oshkosh ATIS

It will not be necessary for Mooney flight aircraft to monitor OSH ATIS.   The ATIS will give information about the normal VFR procedures and will be useful only for surface winds or if an aircraft becomes separated from the Mooney flight and has to arrive independently via the FISK arrival procedure. If wind direction or velocity is any factor, we will be asking Oshkosh tower to issue wind checks during our landing arrival.

Oshkosh Tower

After departing the Madison traffic area, all aircraft shall monitor OSH tower frequency on their number two radio. Mooney lead will announce his position to Oshkosh Tower at 20, 10, and 5 miles out.  ie. “Mooney flight ten miles south of OSH." Listen carefully to Mooney Frequency and Oshkosh tower frequency since they may issue revised instructions for the entire flight or, in case of emergency, to singe aircraft within the flight.

Initial Approach to Oshkosh

For runway 36L and 36R, each aircraft will continue straight ahead for the final for runway 36L and 36R. .  During AirVenture what is normally a parallel taxiway for the single runway 18/36 is designated as 18L/36R and the main runway becomes 18R/36L.

If the arrival runway is 18 or 27, the flight will pass by Fond du Lac Airport (FLD) class “D” airspace until over the south western shoreline of Lake Winnebago. A left turn to heading 360 along the shoreline places the aircraft on a left base for Rwy 27 or a left downwind for Rwy 18R. (See Figure below).

If the arrival runway is 9, the flight will proceed inbound as for Runway 36. At 8.5 miles from Oshkosh the aircraft will approach US Highway 41, a 4 lane highway. Aircraft will keep to the west of US Highway 41, which places the aircraft on a right base for Rwy 9. (see Figure below).

Slow

The Caravan will begin slowing from cruise speed to 105 kts when Mooney Lead is abeam FLD airport. Due to the compression effect during the landing of so many aircraft, expect to reduce speed sooner towards the back of the Mooney Caravan. You should expect to slow well below 105 kts if we have to land on Rwy 09, 18, or 27.

Descent Profile

Approaching OSH, Mooney Lead will announce on Mooney Frequency "Mooney Lead reducing speed to 105 kts." All group leaders will repeat the announcement on Mooney frequency; ie "Delta Leader reducing speed to 105 kts." This will be the signal for all six planes in the formation to reduce power and slow to 105 knots. Maintain visual spacing. As the speed drops from 125 kts IAS to 105 kts IAS, the aircraft spacing will become reduced. At 8.5 DME from OSH VOR (by whichever runway approach is being used) the aircraft will lower gear and begin a descent at 500 fpm maintaining visual spacing. Each aircraft should do its pre-landing checklist at this time. Note that normal compression of Caravan aircraft slowing for landing will cause each subsequent group to reduce speed sooner. BE PREPARED TO SLOW YOUR AIRSPEED WHILE ENROUTE!

Final Approach to Oshkosh

The final portion of the flight route depends on the assigned landing runway at Oshkosh and perhaps by the cloud ceiling. The expected landing runways will be 36L and 36R. If there are strong contrary winds, Oshkosh Tower may direct us to land on any of three other runways: 27, 9 or 18R. If the Mooney Caravan is required to on Runway 27, 9 or 18R, it may be necessary to reduce speed sooner. Maintain position during all turns.  Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side. Aircraft within each group shall continue relative positions in two streams. We will be landing two abreast on one runway if the landing runway is 09, 27, or 18R.  Maintain visual spacing. Aircraft toward the rear of each group should be prepared to make slow reductions in airspeed to facilitate safe spacing from the aircraft in front of them. All aircraft shall be responsible for separation from the aircraft in front of them. Upon arrival at the airport, aircraft shall fly a close traffic pattern (or as directed by tower). Subsequent aircraft shall plan a safe yet close (1500 ft) landing distance from preceding aircraft. The colored dots on runway 9/27 are spaced 1500 ft apart for reference. Use alternating sides of the runway to increase safety. All runways are wide enough to accommodate two Mooneys but only if you maintain your aircraft on your side of the runway.  In all cases, aircraft will be expected to exit the runway as rapidly as practicable. All landing aircraft will be expected to use braking only as needed and taxi at a fast rate of speed in order to exit the runway as rapidly as practicable. The grass on the sides of runway 9/27 has been rolled and aircraft should exit the runway onto the grass as soon as practical.

Approach to runway 36L and 36R (The Expected Routing)

The flight will proceed outbound from Madison and not begin descent until reaching Highway 41 (4 lane road after passing FLD). Expect the localizer for runway 36L to be out of service. At 8.5 NM from OSH (Hwy41), each flight element will lower gear and begin a descent. Maintain visual spacing.

Each group leader and the other odd numbered aircraft land on runway 36L. The even numbered aircraft will land on Runway 36R, which is normally a parallel taxiway

Aircraft shall plan a safe yet close (1500 ft) landing distance from preceding aircraft

Each aircraft will land as long as possible on the runway and taxi straight ahead to the end of the runway.  THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!

Review the go-around instructions below.

Approach to runway 9

If the expected landing runway is runway 9, the flight will proceed as for Runway 36.   Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side.  Maintain position during all turns.  Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side. Aircraft within each group shall continue relative positions in two streams. Maintain visual spacing.  We will be landing in two streams on one runway. Each pilot must land on the right/left side and never allow their wingtips to cross the runway centerline. Use alternating sides of the runway as appropriate to your position in the Caravan flight. (left lands on left and right lands on right). All runways are wide enough to accommodate two Mooneys but only if you maintain your entire aircraft, including wingtips, on your side of the runway

Aircraft toward the rear of each group should be prepared to make slow reductions in airspeed to facilitate safe spacing from the aircraft in front of them. All aircraft shall be responsible for separation from the aircraft in front of them.  At the waypoint EARLY, the flight will turn North to follow and remain west of US Route 41. At this point they will also lower gear and begin a descent. This will be a right base to Rwy 9. When abeam of the airport, each aircraft will make a right turn to final.  Aircraft landing on the right side of the runway should exit Runway 9 to the right onto Runway 13, if possible, or exit the runway onto the grass between Runway 13 and Taxiway A.  Aircraft landing on the left side of the runway should exit Runway 9 to the left onto the grass between Taxiway B1 and Taxiway A.  Pilots that miss Taxiway A shall continue down the runway and follow the directions of the EAA flagperson.

Aircraft shall plan a safe yet close (1500 ft) landing distance from preceding aircraft

Review the Abort Procedures below.

Approach to Runway 27

If the briefed landing runway is Runway 27, at 20 nm south of OSH the flight will overfly the waypoint TURNN and proceed Northeast toward the shore of Lake Winnebago. Remain at least 5 sm from FLD. Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side. Maintain position during all turns. (left lands on left and right lands on right) All runways are wide enough to accommodate two Mooneys but only if you maintain your entire aircraft, including wingtips, on your side of the runway

Aircraft toward the rear of each group should be prepared to make slow reductions in airspeed to facilitate safe spacing from the aircraft in front of them. All aircraft shall be responsible for separation from the aircraft in front of them.  Upon reaching the shoreline, the flight will turn northbound, which is a left base for Rwy 27. At 8.5 DME from OSH, the flight will lower gear and begin a descent. When abeam of the runway, the aircraft shall turn left to final and land long at or beyond the "orange dot." Aircraft landing on the right side of the runway shall exit Runway 27 to the right onto the grass between Taxiway B2 and B3 and aircraft landing on the left side of the runway shall exit Runway 27 to the left onto the grass after passing Runway 13.  All aircraft must land at or beyond the orange dot (1,500 feet from approach end of the runway).

Aircraft shall plan a safe yet close (1500 ft) landing distance from preceding aircraft.

Review the Abort Procedures below.

Approach to Runway 18R

If the briefed landing runway is Runway 18R, the flight will overfly the waypoint TURNN and proceed Northeast toward the shore of Lake Winnebago. Remain at least 5 sm from FLD. Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side. Maintain position during all turns.

Upon reaching the shoreline, the flight will turn northbound, which is a left downwind for runway 18R. At 8.5 DME from OSH, the flight will lower gear and begin a descent. Aircraft landing on the right side of the runway shall exit Runway 18R to the right on Taxiway P5 and follow the EAA flagperson to parking. Aircraft landing on the left side of the runway shall exit Runway 18R to the left on Taxiway A5 and taxi north on Runway 18L.

Aircraft shall plan a safe yet close (1500 ft) landing distance from preceding aircraft

Review the Abort Procedures below.

Landing

The most potentially hazardous part of the entire flight will be the landing. It is absolutely essential that congestion on the runway be minimized. To do this, all aircraft are requested to land as long as is practical based on the aircraft ahead still on the runway. After landing on runway 36L or 36R each aircraft should taxi straight ahead as fast as is safe to clear the runway for landing traffic behind. If landing on runway 9 or 27, turn off into the grass as soon as possible. Any pilot landing on the numbers will be taken out and shot.  Do not hesitate to go around if you think you are too close to the aircraft ahead.

Maintain position during all turns. Maintain visual spacing.  Do not cut off the aircraft ahead or to your side. Aircraft within each group shall continue relative positions in two streams. We will be landing in two streams on one runway. Each pilot must land on the right/left side and never allow their wingtips to cross the runway centerline. Use alternating sides of the runway as appropriate to your position in the Caravan flight. (left lands on left and right lands on right). All runways are wide enough to accommodate two Mooneys but only if you maintain your aircraft on your side of the runway

Mooney Tail Announcements

Mooney Tail has the responsibility to announce to OSH tower when he is five miles out.

"Oshkosh Tower, Mooney Tail, five miles out"

Mooney Tail will also report when he (the last aircraft in the flight) has landed.

"Oshkosh Tower, Mooney Tail Landed"

If Mooney Tail is aware of aborting aircraft that are following him, he should inform OSH tower of that fact. Mooney Tail should assist aborting aircraft with their turn-in by identifying his position and aircraft color on Mooney frequency.

Taxi to Parking (Camping or Parking)

There are two choices for parking:  "Camping" and "Parking".  The Camping area is where the vast majority of the Caravan aircraft will be parked.  In this area, it is permitted to pitch a tent and camp out.  The Camping area is where the Mooney Barbecue will take place and will be the center of any social activities. The parking area will be very remote from the Mooney Camping area.

As soon as you have cleared the runway, display your "Mooney Camping" or "Mooney Parking" sign. Follow the parking and aircraft movement people, generally dressed in day-glow pink vests. This will involve a considerable taxi, most of in the grass. Don't forget to turn off your landing lights and to open your cowl flaps.  Use of full aft trim and full up elevator during taxi is recommended for maximum prop clearance. Avoid potholes and suspicious clumps of grass. Make sure your nose wheel tire is properly inflated.

When you have been parked by the EAA volunteers, please deplane as quickly as possible and help the EAA volunteers in parking the rest of our group. This will involve tailing-in the later arrivals.
