In Memoriam - Waldo Born

Dear Caravan pilots,

I am sorry to inform you that Waldo Born, a loved original member and very active volunteer of our Mooney Caravan passed away in December of 2007. Some of you have already heard this sad news. Waldo and his wife Peggy were our "Transportation Managers." They would arrange to rent a van or two, get a few volunteers to drive and then get behind the wheel themselves for hours to ensure that we were moved quickly and safely from the airport to the hotel and back in Madison. Waldo would pitch in anywhere he saw a need without being asked. He served as a group leader, BBQ helper, and made numerous suggestions for our procedures.

Click this link to see Waldo Born's obituary. Waldo is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Peggy Born.

A suggestion has been made to collect donations for the purpose of dedicating a bronze plaque in Waldo's memory into the EAA memorial wall at Oshkosh. Here is the link for more information.

We need a total of at least $350 to make this idea a reality. I believe that anyone who was touched by Waldo and his wife Peggy's generosity and giving nature will understand why we feel this is an appropriate and thoughtful way to honor him. Waldo was involved in aviation all his life. He served our country by flying in the navy and served aboard the USS Saratoga. He was a regular at AirVenture since 1990. He had flown over 770 Young Eagles in his Mooney.

We will have a collection jar at the registration table in MSN and at the BBQ in OSH for anyone who wishes to support our goal of dedicating a plaque to Waldo's life. Any donation in Waldo's memory will be greatly appreciated.

The following is a brief description of the plaque and memorial wall from the EAA web page

EAA Memorial Wall Dedicated To Those Who Have Loved And Supported Aviation Additional Information Sample Biography/Photo Page Online donation form
EAA's Memorial Wall, located on the edge of Pioneer Airport, is a perpetual tribute honoring aviation enthusiasts who have "gone west." These special people are personally memorialized on bronze plaques mounted within a striking wall constructed of stones brought to Oshkosh by EAA members from all over the world. Each person's inscription on the plaque is composed of two lines of 28 characters each.
A beautiful dedication ceremony is held in this serene park-like setting on the last Sunday morning of AirVenture to honor the year's new inductees. For AirVenture Oshkosh 2008, the ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sunday August 3. Guests should arrive no later than 10:30 a.m. A minimum contribution of $350 is required, and is held in EAA's endowment in perpetuity.

The online donation form includes instructions on writing and submitting the inscription. Please apply no later than April 11th to assure installation for AirVenture. Each inductee may also be honored with a tribute page in the year's Memorial Wall Album, archived in the Fergus Chapel adjacent to Memorial Wall.

To learn more or to receive a printed brochure about the Memorial Wall tribute, please contact development@eaa.org or telephone 1-800-236-1025.
